Brake Pads and Rotors

No matter how cool, how expensive, how big, how much it can haul, or how fast your vehicle is, there’s nothing more important than its ability to stop! It is, without a doubt, that your brakes are the most important part of being able to drive your vehicle.

Have your vehicle’s brakes lost some of their stopping power? Do they even squeak or squeal or scrape metal on metal? The squeak is an early warning that it might be time to replace, at a minimum, the pads. If you’re hearing metal on metal grinding, then its definitely time to do so (quickly) and you could be into some rotor work as well.

No vehicle will stop effectively with worn brake pads. Nobody wants to go through a wall or have an accident because it won’t stop. So it makes a lot more sense (and is way less scary) to be able to just lightly touch the brakes and have the vehicle do exactly what you intended.

When you hit the brake pedal, brake pads press against the rotating disk rotors to slow them down and bring your car to a halt. The pads are brought into action by brake calipers, which are actuated by a hydraulic mechanism when you press the pedal.

Although there are many types of brake pads, ranging from ceramic brake pads to semi-metallic, asbestos and even organic ones, all have a limited lifetime after which they give up due to heat and friction. Brake pads wear out faster than rotors, but as you brake while driving, your brake pads start eroding the metal surface of the rotors. The high friction and heat also cause warping of the rotors.

Pad replacement time depend on many variables….. your driving habits, quality of the previous pads, the caliper and hose conditions, rotor thickness and even the type of car/truck not to mention the area in which you live… ie, in the mountains, driving up and down hills all the time, lots of city stop and go traffic.

Ideally, the recommended brake pads replacement interval is about 30,000 to 35,000 miles of running. However, this is only a rough estimate under general conditions.

Rotor repair and/or replacement is heavily influenced by environmental factors. People living in severe winter regions may need to replace them more often than those living in moderate climate regions. The salts and dryness causes corrosion of rotors, thereby reducing their life. If you wait until AFTER you hear that grinding noise to replace the pads, you’ll be replacing rotors sooner than later.

Your Battery

Determining when you need to replace your battery can be really simple. One of the easiest (and most frustrating) ways is if your car won’t start and when you attempt to re-charge it, the battery won’t hold a charge. This makes it pretty obvious that you need a new battery.

The next most reliable way is if you find that you are having difficulty starting your vehicle in the morning. This usually happens more frequently in the winter, but hot climates can also shorten battery life. If your vehicle starter is sounding more sluggish, it might just be time for a new battery.

Although these symptoms suggest a failing battery, they are not conclusive. It is possible that the connections have become corroded over time and just need to be cleaned or it might be that one of the two battery cables has come loose or needs replacement. You might have a short in the electrical system that is draining power overnight. It is also possible that the alternator is not re-charging the battery as it should.

Batteries do not last forever, the average for factory-installed, original equipment is 8 years. While many people can replace their own battery, they do weigh around 20 pounds and are filled with acid. Batteries come in various sizes (both physical and in ‘cranking power’) and it is important to replace it with one sized appropriately for your vehicle.

So, even if the battery is well past its expiration date, its wise to have the cables and charging system checked out at the same time. That way, you won’t find your self with another dead battery in a week or less after replacing it.

Shocks and Struts

When most of us think about vehicle safety we usually think about brakes first and tires second. However, there is a third and just as important safety item on your vehicle that is often overlooked… shocks and struts.

While some people think that a vehicles shocks and struts are not safety items, we beg to differ. In order for your brakes, tires, anti-lock braking system, vehicle stabilization system and any other electronic assist or computer safety system to work as intended, the tires must be in CONSTANT CONTACT with the ROAD!

When the tire is bouncing or distribution of the weight of the vehicle is “off” these systems do not work properly and can lead to a safety or handling issue. Stopping distances are increased with these worn components and occasionally the driver may even notice the vehicle darts left or right when hitting pot-holes and other rough road surfaces. Worn struts and shocks can also cause other suspension components and tires to wear prematurely, compounding safety issues.

Oil, Air & Cabin Filters

So what’s all this about filters? A new oil filter keeps contaminants out of your expensive engine. A new air filter can help improve your vehicle’s performance. And a new cabin air filter protects you and your passengers from mildew, allergens and more.

Let’s look at each type of filter and when it makes sense to change them.

OIL:
Most vehicle manufacturers recommend changing the oil once a year or every 7,500 miles in passenger car and light truck gasoline engines. For diesel engines and turbocharged gasoline engines, the usual recommendation is every 3,000 miles or six months.

However, when you read the fine print, you’ll find those recommendations are for vehicles that are driven under ‘ideal’ circumstances. Unfortunately, what most of us think of as ‘normal’ driving is actually ‘severe service’ driving, which include frequent short trips, stop-and-go city traffic driving, driving in dusty conditions (gravel roads, etc.), and/or driving at sustained highway speeds during hot weather. For this type of driving, the recommendations change to every 3,000 miles or six months.

To reduce the costs of vehicle ownership and maintenance, many car makers say the oil filter only needs to be replaced at every other oil change. Most mechanics will tell you this is false economy.

Replacing the oil filter every time the oil is changed, therefore, is highly recommended.

AIR:
It’s hard to give a specific time or mileage number because the life of the filter depends on how much stuff it eats. A filter that lasts 20,000 or even 30,000 miles on a vehicle that’s driven mostly on highways may last only a month or two in a rural setting where the vehicle is driven frequently on gravel roads.

Changing it annually or every 15,000 miles for preventative maintenance may be a good recommendation for the city driver, but not those out in the country.

CABIN:
The engine air filter isn’t the only filter you may need to consider. A cabin air filter keeps air inside the passenger compartment of your car from becoming stale and unhealthy. You might not even be aware that you have a cabin air filter. Many newer model cars have cabin filters tucked away inside the dash or elsewhere where it is not easily seen.

Although hidden, a cabin air filter removes contaminants such as dust, pollen, mold spores, and other small particles from the air that circulates through your cars heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and into the passenger cabin.

To keep air quality at its best, filters should be replaced generally once a year or every 15,000 miles – more frequently if you drive in dusty or industrial environments. Regularly changing cabin air filters also can maximize the life of your cars HVAC system by reducing debris and corrosion on the evaporator core.

Timing Belt

Hey, know what’s scary? Most vehicles’ timing belts fail without a lot of warning. And that can leave you stranded somewhere you don’t want to be. So check your vehicle owner’s manual’s suggested mileage for timing belt replacement and talk with the experts at Heritage Service Centre.

The failure of a timing belt is one of the most common reasons why cars break down. If you are familiar with a timing belt functions and how to tell when something is wrong with it, then you can prevent more serious damage. Knowledge about timing belt symptoms will save you from being stranded by the side of a road because of a broken timing belt.

Simply put, a timing belt is a chain or belt that control the opening and closing of a car’s valves. Without a properly functioning timing belt, an engine’s pistons would cease to function and your car would be unable to run. Worn / old timing belts can no longer perform their job properly and why they can lead to performance problems with your car.

There are a number of timing belt symptoms that you can watch for:

if your car starts belching more exhaust than usual,
if the car’s engine vibrates so much that it causes the entire car to shake,
if you experience difficulty in starting the car or
if you hear strange noises coming from the car’s engine.

These are just some of the common timing belt symptoms. If you experience one or more of these it would be an ideal time to consult with a Heritage mechanic as soon as possible. Again, its important to repeat that a timing belt may fail WITHOUT displaying any of these symptoms.

If you’ve ignored the symptoms and your car stops running it will probably be too late. By this point the belt has likely broken. The amount of collateral damage to the other parts of the engine could be severe and include valve damage which is decidedly more expensive than the belt replacement alone would have been.

Either way, Heritage will be happy to work on it.

Wipers

What a great time of year this is for holiday gatherings, great food … and, ick, inclement weather.

Nearly ninety percent of all driving decisions are based on a clear view of the road, which means good visibility is absolutely essential — especially during wet weather when vision may be obscured by water, road splash, sleet or snow on the windshield.

Yet, wiper blades are one of the most neglected components on vehicles today. Many blades are cracked, split, torn, brittle, worn or otherwise in obvious need of replacement. Others may look okay, but do a lousy job of wiping when put to the test. Any blade that’s chattering, streaking or doing a lousy job of wiping is a blade that’s overdue for replacement.

Most experts say wiper blades should be replaced every six to twelve months for optimum performance and driving visibility. This is why we suggest doing during our spring and fall specials.

Exposure to sunlight and ozone causes the rubber to age, even if the wipers aren’t used much. Cold weather can affect blade life, too. Freezing temperatures makes rubber hard and brittle, which increases the tendency to crack and split. Heavy use can be hard on wiper blades, too, because dust, abrasives, road grime and even bug juice wear away the edge that the blades need to wipe cleanly.

A simple check is to try your windshield washers. If the blades are not in good condition, you’ll see why when they attempt to wipe the washer solvent off the glass. This test also gives you the opportunity to check your windshield washer system.

Do both squirters work?
Does the spray hit the windshield where it is supposed to?
Does the washer pump deliver an adequate stream of solvent?

How well the wiper blades perform also depends on the condition of the wiper arms and holders. A blade’s wiping ability is affected by the amount of spring tension on the wiper arm. If the blades can be pulled away from the glass with little resistance, it’s time for new arms.

Check the rear wiper too if your vehicle has a rear wiper system. Many sport utility vehicles, vans, minivans, station wagons, hatchbacks and fastbacks do. After all, it’s just as important to see what’s behind you when backing up in the rain as it is to see what’s ahead.

Brakes

If your vehicle’s radio or air-conditioner aren’t working properly, that’s an inconvenience. But if your brakes aren’t as reliable as they used to be, that’s serious business. With school back in session and fall and winter driving right around the corner. Now more than ever, your vehicle needs great brakes you can rely on for every stop.

One of the most interesting things about vehicle brake system is that a small peddle can stop a huge vehicle with a slight push of brake pad. How it all happens is still a mystery (friction not fiction) for many people. Being “out of sight, out of mind,” the braking system on most vehicles go unnoticed… until a problem crops up.

There are drum brakes, disc brakes, anti-lock brake systems (ABS) and hand or parking brakes, depending on the age of the vehicle that all may come into play when stopping your vehicle. Some use hydraulics, others a cable, and still others an on-board computer to assist and/or control how that all works.

Wearable items, such as break pads, are very difficult to predict a useful life. So much depends on how (fast or up/down hils) and where the car (city stop-n-go or highway trips) is driven and the make and model. If you need ball park figures, you might expect to get 30,000 to 45,000 miles from a set of brake pads.

So, what are the most common signs of brake failure?

Poor braking performance, hard to stop the car
Squealing or grinding noises during braking
Pulling to one side, or grabbing
Loss of brake pedal
Pulsation of the brake pedal during braking
Clicking noises during braking
Excessive drag during acceleration

If you hear or feel any of these symptoms, its definitely time to get them checked. Catching them in time you will save money. Procrastinate and you may suffer the financial (and emotional) consequences of an accident.

Battery Tip
